Resumen

El hígado graso o NAFLD afecta aproximadamente al 25% de la población mundial y es una de las primeras causas de consulta en los servicios de hepatología y de especialistas clínicos, por lo cual el objetivo de esta revisión es dar un enfoque actual, que llegue al mayor número de médicos en nuestro país. La entidad se define como la presencia de esteatosis hepática en una prueba de imagen o una biopsia hepática, más la ausencia de causas secundarias. La génesis del hígado graso es el resultado de la interacción de múltiples factores, entre los que predominan los genéticos, el acúmulo de grasas hepáticas, la resistencia a la insulina y la microbiota intestinal, que llevan a un daño hepatocelular a través de la formación de radicales libres de oxígeno y la posterior activación de la fibrogénesis hepática. El tratamiento se basa fundamentalmente en la pérdida de peso con dieta y ejercicio, continuando con medidas farmacológicas, no farmacológicas y procedimientos quirúrgicos.
