Inteligencia artificial y radiología: la disrupción tecnológica en la transformación de un paradigma

Resumen

La inteligencia artificial (IA) ha demostrado su funcionalidad en la mayor parte de las áreas de la radiología moderna. El progreso notable en el desarrollo de redes neuronales convolucionales ha abierto la puerta para nuevos horizontes en los cuales la IA será protagonista en el análisis de imágenes médicas. En los últimos años, las herramientas de IA en radiología han demostrado su capacidad para reconocer patrones de alta complejidad en las imágenes, con un rendimiento que puede equiparar o, incluso, superar al del médico entrenado. Se han evidenciado escenarios clínicos en los cuales las tecnologías de IA pueden realizar una valoración radiológica más rápida y eficiente respecto de los métodos actuales. Este hecho plantea algunos interrogantes acerca del papel del radiólogo en el futuro de la radiología. Aún existen brechas y retos en el desarrollo ético de la IA en la atención médica, en la validación adecuada de algoritmos, en el desarrollo de mecanismos efectivos para compartir datos y en la solución de los obstáculos regulatorios. En esta revisión, se busca abordar las potenciales aplicaciones de la IA en la labor del radiólogo, no desde la mirada especulativa y distópica, sino desde el reconocimiento de las oportunidades que nos brindan los desarrollos tecnológicos para nutrir la práctica del médico, optimizar los procesos de enseñanza y generar mayor eficacia en la asistencia sanitaria del futuro. En este sentido, los radiólogos cada día son menos espectadores de los desarrollos y más participes y consumidores de estos.
